MLAT stands for Multilateration, which means that we are calculating position of aircraft without ADS-B. MLAT on FR24 is done with the help of our new FR24 receiver, with built in GPS, that we have been offering for free to feeders around the world. In order to make MLAT work, we need 4 receivers covering the same area. By using GPS for time synchronization, we can now calculate the position of aircraft, with just a ModeS transponder, from 4 receivers.

After almost 12 months of hardware development and 9 months of software development we are now ready to publish a first beta version to show what we have achieved. By comparing ADS-B plots with MLAT plots of the same aircraft we verified that we have reached an accuracy of about 10-100 meters on MLAT calculations.

We have decided to invite all our premium users (feeders or paid users) to take part in the beta testing if you want. By enabling "MLAT" in settings you can view aircraft with calculated positions on our FR24 map. Today we only have MLAT coverage in parts of Sweden, Poland and Germany. Our next steps will be to improve the quality of MLAT data, improving the stability of the service and fixing all potential bugs. We will at the same time expand our MLAT coverage to other parts of the world with primary focus on Europe and USA where we have most feeders and best coverage.

During our tests we have seen most of the passenger traffic including CRJ-200, CRJ-700, CRJ-900, Embarer E135, Embraer E170, Dash 8, ATR72, Saab 340, Saab 2000, MD80, Boeing 717 and many, many more. But you have to remember that we need coverage from 4+ receivers in order to calculate positions, and there are today no areas where have coverage below 10.000 feet from 4 receivers. In most areas where we have coverage from 4+ receivers today, it's only on altitudes 20.000 feet and above so don't expect to see any Piper 28 or Cessna 172.

        Help us with coverage!
If you want to host our ADS-B/MLAT receiver to help us increase coverage please fill out this form.

            Mike:

Maybe you can answer this, i tried to zone in to your area on the FR24 premium map, with MLAT box checked to view them, i couldnt find any saying the radar was MLAT origin, are they yellow icons as well, looks like it as i am viewing you pics above, How can one tell, i clicked on a lot of AC and coulnt find any. Just curious.

The easiest solution is to set filter on Radar = T-MLAT
Please note that MLAT planes sometimes loads slower and sometimes just disappear after some minutes, but as I mentioned before, this is just a first beta version.

Ok will try it out mike. Also i know this is not the right thread to ask, but i posted on the proper thread and have not heard anything. We windows 8 phone users got a small update about a week ago, real small, didnt see much in the update i think all there was was the UTC time was added in the ETA section. Just curious if your programmers are working on anything new to add to the windows 8 phone apps??

                Cheers Andy.

                  Shouldn't the Radar code be " F-MLAT " and not " T-MLAT " Since it's coming from the F-xxxx newer hardware receivers.

                  ummm.....

                    Mike,
For what it's worth by way of feedback, after watching the 'T-MLAT' aircraft for a short while (until they disappeared altogether):

                    PRO's
                    1) Good coverage.
                    2) Good plots.
                    3) Great to see some more 'unusual' aircraft (from other parts of the world, I 'see' some of them frequently mode-s only).

                    CON's
                    1) You need to regularly reload the page when they disappear to get them to re-appear. (As stated by yourself).
                    2) Aircraft frequently disappear and for long periods.

In relation to your comment "But you have to remember that we need coverage from 4+ receivers in order to calculate positions, and there are today no areas where (sic) have coverage below 10.000 feet from 4 receivers." Do you mean in general (with any receivers) or with the new receivers? It seems to be the case here in Sydney (Australia) that we have quite a few more than 4 (older) receivers at present. I'd have thought by now there might even be more of these locations.

All in all a great start.
                    Regards,
                    Gregg

FR24 isn't accepting any MLAT upload data from other receivers(SBS,Beast,RadarGadget,DVB-T sticks, etc) at this time. Maybe it will at a later time.

I'm just going by what Mike said on his post on the other thread. It doesn't include MLAT under that naming.
Per that post T-xxxx is windows software feeders. The FR24 hardware doesn't run Windows

but Good thinking about T = Test -MLAT for T-MLAT

Our goal is to move all feeders from xxxx to T-xxxx in about 2 months time. 100 are already moved and we hope to have 200 moved before the end of April.
is there any one can tell me what is the difference between these radars (XXXX) (N-XXXX) (T-XXXX) Thanks in advance

For some strange reason, even though the 'Show MLAT' button was in settings and all the clicking on / off i still could not see any MLAT Traffic until i refreshed my browser.

Here is a Screenshot of the first Aircraft that i could see with MLAT.

All the hard work of setting it up is starting to pay off, well done team.

I don't know if this is a bug with MLAT, the Aircraft in the Screenshot below was visibly moving slower than other Aircraft on the Map,
Its at 43,000 ft but is showing as only doing 180 mph, BER459 / D-ABAG took off from TXL and overtook it.
