We have some extra DVB-T sticks (including antenna) in the office that we'll send out for free to the first 50 applications we get from locations where we currently don't have coverage (check map on Flightradar24.com). If you want to apply, please send an email with your name and full address to fredrik@fr24.com
Why on earth would you recommend rtl1090?
ADSB# has much better reception and runs much simpler. (Also a lot of code has been "borrowed" from ADSB# as it's open source. Still the DSP is much better than rtl1090.
You can simply test yourself. But the true colours or commercialism always are shown when it comes to money, so one could only guess why a lesser product is endorsed instead of testing and using the best.

I am picking up much more planes on the ground from Amsterdam Schiphol (EHAM) then those professional tuners.
Or my location is just very good, or this setup is working very well.

      Edit:
Never mind on the not promoting adsb# .... they of course have their own hub which could be considered "competition" for FL24. (However i know it's creator wouldn't mind FL24 linking up to that hub.)
If FL24 and it's members are truly interested in having the best reception, it might be possible a none hub function could be made especially for FL24.
I would have to ask it's creator.... but only if you guys are interested...

If you need help installing, come to irc.freenode.net and join #sdrsharp
And we'll fix you up with adsb# sharp as well...
And if the guys from FL24 had done a little more research and/or read my forum posts they would have found out that the R820T is MUCH better than the E4000 tuner for ADS-B.
And.... that the RTLSDR R820T mini even more better working than the big version.
        http://x264.nl/dump/rtlsdr_big-mini.jpg (bottom one)
The mini has a lower noise floor and much less spikes.... 1090MHz reception skyrocketed with the mini.
        Compare: http://x264.nl/dump/rtlsdr-r820t-big-sdrsharp.jpg vs http://x264.nl/dump/rtlsdr-r820t-mini-sdrsharp.jpg

And then there is the antenna, you can buy a "ADS-B" antenna for nearly 200 EURO (which is just a piece of coax cable) or you can actually do some testing and find out a proper GP works so much better.
        Like so: http://x264.nl/dump/ads-b-antenna-gr...ane-proper.jpg

But let's have the results speak for themselfs: http://x264.nl/dump/rtlsdr-mini-virt...1.1-record.jpg (yes this is my reception, all planes on the map are from my setup)

Let me add some valid ebay links as well:

          $12,66

          $12.86

Don't have the numbers fool you, they have thousands, they change price depending on how much are sold.
$12.66 has been a fixed price for months now, as they still keep selling, they started out as low as $10.

Sometimes there are multiple sellers as well, myflash168 and gbox_au are two good sellers..... however all rtlsdrs i ordered came from the same warehouse in Hong Kong.

              [first post]

Got my eBay R820T yesterday after a 2.5 week wait (not bad). Finally managed to get and figure out the best software for my Linux environment re: FlightRadar24, and even managed to track a few planes that were within 80km or so. I need to figure out some way to cheaply/easily/safely add a better antenna

On that note, since these DVB-T sticks are inexpensive enough to getting more than one, it would sure be nice to know of a reliable eBay supplier of the R820T versions that have the so-called 'safe' antenna diodes to prevent blowing the LNAs (or so I read). Does anyone know of such a source?

P.S. Is 80km a normal range for the tiny supplied antenna?

If the antenna is in a steel safe under your bed then yes, 80km is exceptional.......................see what I'm saying?

Originally in an upstairs room beside a window facing, in a higher part of the town and province. Now I am going to try in a basement beside a window, but with a good view to the west.

The more sky it can see & the higher it is then the better results you'll get.
So for best results it needs to be outside, in a position where it has 360 degrees of clear open space around it, no buildings or structures at the same height for some distance.
With the normal receivers you should expect 250km + but I'm not sure what the range is like on these.

I hooked mine up to my regular, roof-mounted antenna to compare with SBS-3 and couldn't really see much difference. I got hits over 200nm away also with the stick.

                        EDIT: found the answer myself:

Download the latest SQLite amalgation files from http://www.sqlite.org/download.html (first download item of that page). Unzip contents into /home/sqlite3, switch to adsbox folder and run make. That's it.

Here is what I did (assuming your are root)

                              Radek

I've been following your thread on dump1090. I have a RTL dongle which works well with RTL1090 and Plane Plotter, but I would like to try dump1090. I can get it through github, but when I hit make, I get the following:

                              todd-lefkowitzs-computer-1618:dump1090 eyeman27$ make
                              gcc -O2 -g -Wall -W `pkg-config --cflags librtlsdr` -c dump1090.c
Package librtlsdr was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `librtlsdr.pc'
                              to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
                              etc......

I use Mac OSX, and don't have much Linux experience. Can you help?

You can do the way I did:
                                - install macports from here http://www.macports.org/install.php
                                - install libusb, rtl-sdr from ports
                                - download the zip from https://github.com/MalcolmRobb/dump1090
                                - unzip it
                                - run make in the dump1090 folder
I compiled it like that on Mac OS X 10.5.5 and 10.7.5. I hope I didn't forget some step.

There is another idea to do it here http://www.sigint-group.org/board90-...x-compilieren/
The thread is in German language, but it is easy to read. I didn't test it, but it looks ok.

There is also a compiled version for Mac (very old one) here http://www.radiohobbyist.org/blog/?p=1248 You still need rtl-sdr and libusb.
